What to Expect From the New Volkswagen Golf GTI
When most of us think of a hot hatch, the Volkswagen Golf GTI immediately springs to mind. This little German model has become a firm favourite with hatchback enthusiasts, so new variants are highly anticipated. With the release of the 2018 variant, here are some details of what you can expect.
It goes without saying, but it is worth emphasising how fantastic the new Volkswagen Golf GTI performance is. Like the R variant, the GTI is equipped with the Volkswagen EA888 four cylinder, turbocharged 2.0 litre petrol engine. This engine has been in use for ten years, with consistent output improvements. In the Mk6 the engine produced 155 kW, and this was boosted to 162 kW in the Mk7. This Mk7.5 now offers 169 kW and 350 Nm torque, shaving a tenth of a second from the 0-100 kilometre per hour sprint to 6.4 seconds. This impressive rate has not compromised the fuel consumption figures as the GTI has a frugal 6.6 litres per 100 kilometre rate.
There are obvious ties to the Mk 7 model with the design and basic structure of the interior cabin remaining unchanged. However, if you look closer, you’ll see that almost all the technology in the cabin is new. There are two halves to the VW technology array. The first is the optional Active Info Display. This consists of a 12 inch digital driver’s customisable display replacing the analogue gauges to show driving data, song information and navigation maps directly in front of you. The other half relates to the new 9.2 inch, high res, central touchscreen that allows basic gesture controls.
Of course, the cabin is also littered with GTI touches. The steering wheel has the signature red GTI stitching, but there is also tartan fabric seats that are comfortable and a staple of the GTI VW brand since the original Mk 1. There is also soft touch door tops and dashboard to complete the pleasing aesthetic.
While the new Volkswagen Golf GTI is clearly a hot hatch, it still offers great practicality. The model offers almost class leading space with a 380 litre boot that dwarfs the 316 litres offered by the Ford Focus ST. The boot is well shaped, and there are tie down points, shopping bag hooks, bins and a 12 volt socket.
