A Very Brief 2018 Volkswagen Polo Review

The new 2018 VW Polo is the smallest Volkswagen car on sale here in Australia. However, this latest model is designed to take you to new territory with extra space, new tech, and some added sophistication. Let’s take a quick look at the new 6th generation Polo and see what’s on offer for the VW small car fans.

Volkswagen Polo 2018

The Main Highlights

A typical small car in this segment would have a plucky character but would lack many of the features that we would expect. However, this is not the case with the latest VW Polo, which is an entry-level car with a full on the feature set. The ride and handling characteristics are very refined, the rear seat space has been improved, there is now more cargo space, both active safety tech and new infotainment options are available, and there is a range of interesting three-cylinder turbo engines to choose from. On the downside, the cabin trims are on the basic side, and there are no overhead grab handles.

Exploring Some Details

This 6th generation VW Polo is more refined than its predecessor with features that are often only found on larger models in the range. The Polo has grown physically to accommodate some of these changes, it’s 92mm longer between the wheels than the outgoing model, and it now has more cargo space than the Mazda 3. In fact, the overall 4,053mm length is almost the same as a VW Mk4 Golf from the early noughties. The style is recognisable, safe and there are fourteen colours to choose from. There are four variants to choose from; they are the Trendline, Comfortline, Beats, and GTI. There is a premium Highline variant that should be available here in the near future.

Looking Under the Bonnet

With nine different engines available globally, as diesel, petrol or gas power plants, there will be plenty of choices. Here in Australia, we will have only two choices initially, with others to follow later. These first two engines are 1.0L three-cylinder turbo petrol units that will generate either 70 kW of power and 175 Nm of torque or 85 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque, depending on your chosen specification. The entire Australian engine range isn’t settled at this time, but the Trendline will use these formerly described specs and the Comfortline and Beats variants will use the latter engine versions.
